The Effect of Maximal Doses of Formoterol and Salbutamol from a Metered Dose Inhaler on Pulse Rates, ECG, and Serum Potassium Concentrations (11)The increase in FEV! value became immediately obvious after the first drug dose. The FEVj values after the last dose averaged 2.53 L for the formoterol study day and 2.50 L for the salbutamol dosages. These figures were not statistically significantly different (p = 0.87). The maximum increase in FEV! value was reached more quickly after salbutamol (after 3 hours) than after formoterol when it was only seen after 5 hours. The results of the FVC, the PEF, and the FEF25-75% were practically identical, although the FVC and FEF25-7596 values showed a maximal response 1 hour earlier on the formoterol day. The Pulse Rate
Table 3 shows the pulse rates measured in all patients during the 6 hours of observation. The mean basal pulse rate was 73.3*min_I on the formoterol day and 75.2*min~ on the salbutamol day. Both groups showed a slight increase in mean pulse rates up to 3 to 4 hours after the first dose (in other words, after the last puff in the majority of the patients). In no instance was a pulse rate above 140*min“ measured. The pulse frequency after the last puff averaged 83.2 on the formoterol day and 83.1 on the salbutamol day. This difference was again not statistically significant (ANCOVA p = 0.7).
