The Effect of Maximal Doses of Formoterol and Salbutamol from a Metered Dose Inhaler on Pulse Rates, ECG, and Serum Potassium Concentrations (10)

Only one patient (No. 5) reached the highest possible dose on both the treatment days. Six patients required the same number of puffs with each drug, that is to say, the equivalent doses of the two P-mimetics on the two treatment days necessary for a maximal response. Four patients required relatively more salbutamol and two needed more formoterol. In patient 12, this gave rise to a feeling of discomfort on the formoterol day. In patient 2, flattening of the T wave was seen on both the formoterol and the salbutamol days as soon as the first two puffs had been administered from the inhaler. After reevaluation by a cardiologist, the ECG on the formoterol day was rated as normal, ir, no ST-T changes, with a heart rate of 100 beats#min “. The other patients ended the study prematurely when the maximal degree of bronchospasmolysis had been attained, which was after formoterol in ten patients and after salbutamol in 11. Results of Lung Function Tests
The results of the FEV, measurements are portrayed in Table 2 and are also shown graphically in Figure 1. The mean basal FEVi on both treatment days was practically identical: 1.86 L (50 percent of the predicted value) on the formoterol day; and 1.85 L (49.9 percent of the predicted value) on the salbutamol day.
