Patients with longstanding disease (>2 years) had lower Pa02 at maximal exercise (80 percent pred vs 87 percent pred, p<0.05) than patients with shorter duration.
Smokers and exsmokers did not differ in their blood gases vs nonsmokers, nor did treated and untreated subjects show any significant differences.
Lung Function Data in Radiographic Subgroups
At rest, only the sum of Pa02 and PaC02 differed significantly between the radiographic stages, being 15.0 kPa in stage 3 and 15.9 kPa in stage 2 in the sitting position (p<0.05). At maximal work, CdynL was lower in stage 3 than in stage 2 (Table 1). Among the stage 3 patients, those with more pronounced lung shrinkage showed particularly affected lung function (Table 1). The Pa02 at maximal work did not differ significantly between the entire stage 3 group and stage 2, but the sum of PaOz and PaC02 was lower in stage 3 (p<0.01).
Limitation of Working Capacity On the whole, the exercise capacity was moderately reduced (Table 1). The HRmax was, on the average, 90 percent pred, p<0.001, and the fall in BE during exercise was 5.3 mmol/L. The ST-T segment during exercise was normal in all patients, and no significant arrhythmia occurred.
