The purpose of the present study was to evaluate how lung function during exercise was affected in sarcoidosis. Exercise capacity was studied in a progressive exercise test during measurements of ventilation, lung mechanics, and arterial blood gases.
The aim was also to assess if lung function studies during exercise add information of clinical significance not obtained by studies at rest.
Material and Methods
Sixty-three consecutive patients with radiological signs of pulmonary sarcoidosis and a positive Kveim test and/or lymph node biopsy were studied. Their clinical, radiographic, and resting lung function data have been presented in detail earlier. The mean age of the patients was 42 years (range 20 to 71). Thirty-five were men and 28 women. Thirty-eight patients were lifelong nonsmokers. Twenty-one subjects had no respiratory symptoms. Forty-two patients had minor to moderate symptoms, iet cough or dyspnea or both. None of the patients had clinically overt heart disease.
