Exercise Limitation in Patients with PolymyositisPolymyositis is a systemic disease characterized by degeneration and inflammation of striated muscle. Although it primarily affects the proximal limb muscles, it also can involve the respiratory musculature. Occasionally this respiratory muscle dysfunction can produce symptomatic restrictive lung disease in the absence of radiographic evidence of parenchymal disease. However, dyspnea usually occurs because of radiographically apparent diffuse interstitial inflammation or fibrosis, which may contribute to the patients morbidity and even progress to overt respiratory insufficiency.
